Indian Railways in general & SWR in particular is undertaking infrastructure development for enhancing line capacity with massive investment. Tremendous strides have been made in area of infrastructure development.
In the year of 2016-17, this Railway has commissioned new Railway line of 201 km. This is the highest ever commissioning of new lines achieved in the history of SWR .
The new line commissioned this year include 111 km. between Shravanabelagola-Nelamangala, 27 km between Ginigera-Chikkabenakal &63 km between Rayadurga-Kadiridevarapalli. An amount of Rs.1900 cr. has been has been incurred in upgrading infrastructure this year which is the highest so far.The grant of EBR (IF) - Extra Budgetary (Institutional finance) allotment of Rs.850 cr.has been fully booked.
All over Iidian Railways , 953 kms of new line commissioned. This is the highest ever In the history of Railways.The contribution of SWR to this figure is nearly 21 % ( 201 km of 953 km ) which is extraordinary achievement.
In addition to the record of new lines, the following doubling works (totalling to 59 km ) have been commissioned. This include 13 km of Doubling between Yelahanka - Chennasandra, 7 km of doubling between Yesvantpur –Yelahanka, 16.48 km between Harlapur-Sompur-Bannikoppa, 11.52 Km between Kambarganiv-Kasanhatti-Alnawar & 10.69 km Bannikoppa-Bhanapur section on SWR.
Railway has successfully carried out the extremely difficult work of “Shifting of Tippu Sultan Armoury” for Bangalore-Mysore doubling during the year to facilitate doubling work between Bengaluru and Mysuru.Such a work has been executed for the first time in India and probably in Asia.
The section between Amravati colony to Kotturu has been commissioned with absolute block system and 4 crossing stations.
On the newly commissioned lines 15 crossing stations have been commissioned in addition to 11 no.s of Halt stations.
Commissioning of newly electrified lines on AC electric traction
To speed up traffic on the oversaturated lines, SWR has commissioned Electric traction on 257 Route KMs. With the commissioning electrified territory has increased from 208 RKMs to 465 Route Kilometers (RKMs) .

As a part of Railway Electrification, 04 nos. Traction Sub Stations (TSSs) were commissioned during 2016-17 viz. at Sri Satya Sai Prasanthi Nilayam (SSPN), Malugur (MLU) & Someshwara (SMWA) in Yelahanka – Dharmavaram Section and at Bidadi (BID) in Bengaluru – Ramanagaram Section.
All over IR, 2013 kms of electrification has been done (against the target of 2000 kms). This is the highest ever achieved by Indian railways. Here too, SWR made its mark by contributing 13 % of Electrified track this year.
For the maintenance the rakes, MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) Shed was commissioned at Banaswadi during the financial year 2016-17.
