SWR Reaffirms Commitment to Safe Drinking Water with Rigorous Quality Monitoring Across the Zone
South Western Railway has taken comprehensive and stringent measures to ensure the availability of safe and potable drinking water at railway stations and colonies. Continuous monitoring, regular testing and quality-control measures are being undertaken to ensure compliance with prescribed water quality standards and to safeguard the health and well-being of passengers and railway staff.
As part of the water quality monitoring programme, samples are regularly tested for residual chlorine, bacteriological parameters and chemical parameters. These systematic checks enable timely identification of any quality-related issues and ensure that the drinking water supplied across the railway network remains safe for consumption.
Key Measures Implemented Across SWR Zone:
- Daily Residual Chlorine Monitoring: Health Inspectors (HIs) conduct daily checks on residual chlorine levels at stations and colonies to guarantee adequate disinfection.
- Systematic Chlorination: The Engineering Department carries out regular chlorination at all water-supply installations, closely monitored via routine residual chlorine testing.
- Bacteriological & Chemical Examinations: Monthly bacteriological water samples are collected and sent to laboratories for rigorous cross-verification and microbiological safety assessment. Concurrently, chemical samples are collected and tested at prescribed intervals.
- Prompt Rectification Mechanism: If any water sample reporting unsatisfactory results, immediate corrective action including cleaning, re-chlorination, and system rectification is executed by the Engineering Department. Follow-up testing continues until water quality is certified completely fit.
Zone-Wide Water Quality Testing Summary (Period: 14/09/2026 to 22/09/2026)
The consolidated report covering the Hubli, Bengaluru, and Mysore
divisions demonstrates a robust testing framework with hundreds of evaluations conducted:
·Residual Chlorine: A total of 249 samples were collected and tested, and all 249 samples were found fit. No samples were found unfit and no results are awaited.
·Bacteriological Analysis: A total of 18 samples were collected, of which 11 samples were found fit. The results of 7 samples are awaited.
·Chemical Analysis: A total of 32 samples were collected, of which 30 samples were found fit. The results of 2 samples are awaited.
Division-Wise Breakdown:
- Hubli Division: Collected 143 Residual Chlorine samples (all 143 fit), 10 Bacteriological samples (all 10 fit), and 30 Chemical Analysis samples (all 30 fit) with zero unfit cases recorded.
- Bengaluru Division: Collected 72 Residual Chlorine samples (all 72 fit) and 1 Bacteriological sample (fit), maintaining a clean record with zero unfit samples.
- Mysore Division: Collected 34 Residual Chlorine samples (all 34 fit), along with 7 Bacteriological and 2 Chemical samples currently pending final results.
South Western Railway continues to prioritize passenger well-being through vigilant, round-the-clock water quality surveillance and prompt remedial frameworks.
