About MDDTI
Multi Disciplinary Divisional Training Institute (MDDTI), Bengaluru is a premier training institute of South Western Railway, committed to developing competent, confident and future-ready railway professionals. It operates its extended campus at Bengaluru Cantonment. The institute traces its origins to 16 September 1957, when the System Technical School was established at Bengaluru based on the recommendations of the Technical Training Committee Report (1955). Initially established to train Apprentice Mechanics and Apprentice Train Examiners of Southern Railway, the institute progressively expanded its training mandate to meet the evolving technical and operational requirements of the Indian Railways.
Over the decades, the institute evolved from the System Technical School to the System Training School (STS) and subsequently to the Supervisors’ Training Centre (STC) in 1992. Following the formation of South Western Railway in 2003, the institute further expanded its role, catering to the training requirements of supervisory and Loco Running Staff across multiple railway establishments. In 2020, in accordance with Railway Board guidelines, the institute was redesignated as the Multi Disciplinary Divisional Training Institute (MDDTI), Bengaluru, reflecting its broader and multi-disciplinary training mandate.
Today, MDDTI/Bengaluru along with its extended campus in MDDTI/BNC serves as an important centre for induction, promotional, refresher and conversion training for railway personnel across C&W, Loco and Civil Engineering, with a strong focus on safety, technical competence, operational excellence and continuous professional development, having capacity to train nearly 6000 trainees per year.
MDDTI has a distinctive place in the training ecosystem of Indian Railways. The institute is authorised by the Railway Board to conduct the Training of Trainers (ToT) programme, a mandatory programme for trainers, Vice Principals and Principals of training centres across Indian Railways. Since its inception, the programme has been conducted in around 150 batches, benefiting more than 2,500 railway personnel. The institute has consistently operated at over 110% capacity utilisation, reflecting the confidence placed in MDDTI and the growing demand for quality railway training.
At MDDTI, training extends beyond conventional classroom instruction. The institute adopts a participative, experiential and application-oriented approach that connects theoretical knowledge with real-world railway operations.
Training methodologies include:
- Interactive classroom sessions and lectures
- Group discussions, exercises and case-based learning
- Practical demonstrations and working models
- Field visits to workshops, depots, loco sheds, yards and pit lines
- Project work, book reviews and collaborative learning
- Exposure to emerging technologies and contemporary railway practices
The institute draws upon the experience of its dedicated faculty comprising gazetted and non-gazetted railway personnel, supported by visiting faculty that includes serving and retired railway officers, supervisors and subject-matter experts from industry and other professional organisations. With the Indian Railways undergoing rapid technological and organisational transformation, MDDTI is continuously evolving its training ecosystem to address emerging requirements in safety, technology, leadership, digitalisation, sustainability and operational excellence.
Building on more than six decades of training heritage, MDDTI remains committed to its core purpose i.e., “excellence in railway service.”
