SWR CELEBRATES 79TH INDEPENDENCE DAY
SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY ACHIEVES RECORD PERFORMANCE IN SAFETY, SPEED, REVENUE, AND PASSENGER AMENITIES
Shri Mukul Saran Mathur, General Manager of SWR, stated that the highest priority has been given to safety in train operations, along with extraordinary growth in infrastructure development and connectivity. SWR has electrified 89% of the rail network.
·Maintained one of the best safety records in Indian Railways with zero consequential accidents since January 2025.
·Achieved historic freight loading of 29.55 million tonnes (Jan–July 2025), generating ₹3,056.47 crore revenue totalling to₹5,468 crore originating revenue.
·Enhanced speeds up to 130 kmph on key routes with ₹1,015 crore invested in large-scale track renewal.
·Led in digital payments across Indian Railways with 100% QR/UPI-enabled stations and top ranking in UTS & PRS transactions.
Shri Mukul Saran Mathur, General Manager, SWR hoisted the tri colour flag at Rail Soudha, Hubballi the Head Quarters Office of South Western Railway, today on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day. He said that SWR has played a pivotal role in driving the socio-economic growth of this region.
In his address, General Manager stated that SWR continues to be among the safest zones in Indian Railways, with zero consequential train accidents or SPAD cases since January 2025, and only 3.92% of the total accidents on Indian Railways over the past five years. Key safety measures include construction of 16 Road Over Bridges, 27 Road Under Bridges, 10 Foot Over Bridges, elimination of 12 level crossings, and installation of 54 km safety fencing, advanced signaling, hot axle detectors, and fire safety systems in all AC coaches.
He stated that under Infrastructure development over SWR is progressing at a fast pace. Since January 2025, 53 km of rail lines has been commissioned and 94 Track KM of electrification has been added raising the electrified route to 3,303 Route KM, covering 89% of the network.
Operational efficiency has been boosted with 89% punctuality, speed upgrades to 130 kmph between Bengaluru–Jolarpettai, and ₹1,015 crore invested in track renewals. Freight loading reached a record 29.55 million tonnes (Jan–July 2025) generating ₹3,056 crore, while total revenue touched ₹5,468 crore, with strong growth in freight, passenger, and sundry earnings.
He also mentioned thatPassenger services expanded with 8 new trains, 24 extensions, and 232 special trains. Eleven pairs of Vande Bharat trains now operate in Karnataka. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, works are progressing at 53 stations, with modern amenities, lifts, escalators, and smart navigation guides being introduced.
He stated that Security has been strengthened with 102 stations under CCTV surveillance, 94 narcotics cases detected, and over 466 persons rescued from trafficking. Infrastructure development included 53 km of new lines, 94 track km of electrification, and sanction of two major doubling projects worth over ₹3,500 crore.
Employee welfare remains a priority with 1,490 promotions, modernized healthcare facilities, and record output from Hubballi and Mysuru workshops. Sustainability milestones include 43 new electric locomotives, 147 out of 202 diesel-to-electric conversions, and expansion of solar power capacity towards a 20 MW target.
SWR also excelled in sports, winning medals at national and international events, and was recognized for excellence in operations and asset management. These achievements reflect the collective dedication of SWR’s workforce and its commitment to operational excellence, passenger comfort, and nation-building.
