Beat PLASTIC POLLUTION”- SWR to ensure THIS year’s theme for world environment day

South Western Railway observed World Environment day o­n 05thJune, 2018. Shri B.B. Singh, Additional General Manager of South Western Railway administered World Environment Day pledge to the Officers and staff at Rail Soudha, South Western Railway, Headquarters Office, Hubballi. 

A skit o­n the consequences of Pollution and importance of conservation of Environment was presented by the staff of Hubballi Workshop.

Speaking o­n the occasion of World Environment Day, Shri B.B. Singh said this year our country is chosen as global host country for this day of international significance.  It's matter of pride for us and also a great responsibility. Being second most populous country our contribution of carbon foot prints o­n environment needs to be controlled through focused actions that help in protecting environment. He said plastic consumption in India was increasing at the rate of 3% per annum and Railway is taking measures to do its part and beat plastic pollution over the Zone.  He advised to avoid indiscriminate use of plastic and o­nly plastic that can be recycled should be used. The theme of this year is "Beat Plastic Pollution" which is highly relevant in present scenario. Ill effects of plastic needs to be taken note of and we shall work towards beating plastic pollution as a nation.  

            Shri T.V. Subbarao, Chief Rolling Stock Engineer, proposed vote of thanks and requested to spread the importance of plastic free environment.  This programme was followed by a mass tree plantation drive in Rail Soudha.

A few of the important steps taken by SWR in conservation of environment is below:

§Complete prohibition of Plastic usage in Railway station premises and trains by replacing it by paper.

§Creating awareness of Plastic pollution by playing skits, Jingles, in  Railway stations
