Union Railway Minister meets Karnataka Chief Minister regarding Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project

Shri Piyush Goyal, Railway Minister held a meeting with Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, Chief Minister of Karnataka regarding Project o­n Suburban Railway to Bengaluru.  They jointly addressed the media after the meeting. 

Shri Piyush Goyal informed that the State Government had put 19 conditions for implementation of Sub-urban project to Bengaluru ,  in January 2019 .He has stated that the conditions put by State Govt. were acting as  road blocks for commencing the project. Chairman ,Railway Board has written a letter to Chief Secretary to Govt. of Karnataka o­n 8th Feb. explaining stand of Railways with condition wise remarks ,agreed to many conditions and requested Govt. of Karnataka to review GO to withdraw other conditions .

Consequent to today’s discussion of Minister of Railways with Chief Minister , said ‘19’ conditions subject to which ‘in principle’ approval was given  by State cabinet of Karnataka will be ratified,as mutually agreed during the meeting today . Initially, 161 kms of suburban project will be taken up as per feasibility report and later o­n extension of corridors can be taken up .  In next cabinet meeting of Government of Karnataka scheduled to be held o­n 25-02-2019 ,cabinet resolution will be passed o­n the same. GO to that extant will be communicated to Ministry of Railways for further taking up the project.  

 The Railway Minister informed that this is 23,000 Cr project for 161 Km  is expected to be completed in 6 years from approval by Government of Karnataka.. The project envisages setting up of 82 stations with 12 interchanges with Metro. It also provides connectivity to airport as per Government of Karnataka requirement after signing SPV. 

Minister of Railways agreed for granting railway land for the project at very nominal lease basis  of Re.1 per acre, which will reduce the cost of project by about Rs.6700 crores,nearly by 30 %. Government of Karnataka agreed for unequivocal right of FSI ‘5’ o­n railway land to Indian Railway for financing of project.

Government of Karnataka will approve the entire corridor without any curtailment.  It is also agreed by Government of Karnataka will do cost sharing of two doubling projects Baiyyappanahalli-Hosur, Yesvantpur-Banaswadi-Hosur which has been that initially agreed and later  disagreed upon by State Govt. (latter as o­ne of the conditions in Government of Karnataka , Government Order o­n 19-01-2019).  

The Minister said that State of Art, AC EMU (Electrical Multiple Unit) rake is planned for suburban corridor which will provide safe and comfortable journey to Bangaloreans.  He suggested for providing multimodal tickets similar to Mumbai so that people can buy tickets for the suburban rail and metro jointly.

Shri Piyush Goyal opined that Suburban Rail is much cheaper than other modes of transport such as Metro and buses and pointed out that it contributes significantly to ease traffic congestion problem that is plaguing Bengaluru .
