136 PARCEL TRAINS RUN o­n SWR CARRYING

 ESSENTIALS

Indian Railways is running freight and parcel express trains for nationwide transportation of essential commodities during the lockdown.  During the period of lockdown, time tabled and o­n demand Parcel express trains have come to the rescue of transportation of essential commodities, dairy products, and perishables.

SWR has involved in timely transportation of essential commodities including medicines and medical equipment, milk & food stuff, perishables like vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, food grains, spices, dry coconut, Areca nut, chilly etc. to all parts of the country. Electronic equipment, motor cycles were also carried to New Delhi, Howrah and Dimapur (Nagaland).

During the lock down period from 01.04.2020 to 28.06.2020 SWR has so far run 136 parcel trains carrying 11,209 Tonnes of parcels to different parts of the country ensuring adequate supply of essentials including medicines.

72 Nos. parcel trains were operated towards Howrah of which 69 trains originated from Bengaluru/Yesvantpur carrying vegetables, fruits, hatched eggs, auto parts, medicines etc.  and 3 trains from Vasco-da-gama carrying chocolates, milk products, sanitary items etc.  3,446 Tonnes of parcel traffic were loaded from Karnataka to Howrah/Shalimar. 

22 Nos. parcel trains were run from Bengaluru/Yesvantpur towards New Delhi carrying 1,412 Tonnes of medicines, paper, hatched eggs, vegetables and fruits.   19 parcel trains were run from Bengaluru/Yesvantapur towards Guwahati and Dimapur the North eastern states carrying 1755 Tonnes of parcels of Medicines, food items, fruits, chili powder, Hatched eggs, sanitary items, saries, silk yarn etc,.  2 parcel trains were also run from Vasco-da-gama to Guwahati carrying, medicines, chocolate products, medicines, spare parts plastic tubes, fish etc.  9 Nos parcel train were operated from Bengaluru/Yesvantpur towards Jaipur/Kanakapura in Rajasthan carrying 536 Tonnes of parcels i.e. Medicines, face masks, PPE kits, aluminum parts, courier goods, dry fruits etc,.  7 Parcel express services were also run to Gorakhpur, carrying 453 Tonnes of parcel consisting of Hatched eggs, medicines, spices, supari etc.

This is the first time that the time tabled Parcel express trains are being tried by SWR to different parts of the country, wherein local industries, e-commerce companies, interested groups, individuals and prospective loaders can book parcels to their destinations.  This was also played as an alternative source to the leased parcel carriers, who are hither to catered by regular train services. Hon’ble Minister of Railway and Hon’ble Minister of State of Railways have also extended their full encouragement in running of timetable parcel trains through social media and other publicity.  Through National level print and electronic media running of such special parcel trains have been proliferated for capturing the desired traffic.

SWR is committed to transport essential commodities to meet the daily requirements of markets in different parts of the country. Government agencies concerned, NGOs, traders can contact Control offices at Bengaluru, Mysuru and Hubballi to avail the service of parcel vans o­n South Western Railway.
