Ministries in Government of India observe Swachhata Pakhwara from 16th Sept to coincide with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi Ji, the father of the nation o­n 2nd Oct.  As directed by Railway Board ‘Swachhata Pakhwara’ was observed o­n SWR from 16.09.2020 to 30.09.2020 with each day assigned for different activities that were taken up all over the Zone.

Massive cleanliness drives were organized at various locations at Railway stations, circulating areas, station yards, Railway colonies, led by officers and staff of Headquarters and Divisions. The Swachhata Pakhwara has been done throughout the railway premises o­n SWR and spread the message of the importance of cleanliness and improving our surrounding by maintaining cleanliness.

In the current scenario of global pandemic of COVID-19, the importance of cleanliness activities and spreading awareness of the same has becomes more significant. The three Divisions and Workshops undertook activities to rekindle mass awareness o­n cleanliness, hygiene and preserving environment keeping in view the various instructions and guidelines issued by Government. Precautions like maintaining social distance, wearing face masks and sanitizing hands were strictly ensured during the cleanliness campaigns.

Additional Divisional Railway Manager of the respective division was nominated as nodal officer for Swachhata Pakhwara with the Chief Rolling Stock Engineer being the Nodal officer at the Zonal level. Under the nodal officers at Divisions, Swachhata Pakhwara was observed in Hubballi Division, Bengaluru Division and Mysuru Division.

The works organized during Swachhata Pakhwara at Workshops, Divisions and at Headquarter level are as under:

16.09.2020 - Swachh awareness:- The first day of the Swachhata  Pakhwara was observed as Swachh Awareness day over the Zonal, Divisional and Workshop offices of SWR.  At SWR Zonal Headquarters, Rail Soudha, Shri Ajay Kumar Singh, GM/SWR administered the Swachhta pledge to the officers and staff duly maintaining social distancing precautions.  The members of the Scouts and Guides wing of SWR actively participated in the tree plantations and Shramdhan arrangements o­n the first day of Swachh Pakhwara. Swachta pledge was administered to all Railway staff with tree plantation drive at all locations.

17.09.2020 - Swachh Samwad (Cleanliness dialogue/In-house):- Upkeep of Railway stations and audio/video campaign o­n sanitation and upkeep of Railway colonies and other institutions o­n Railway premises.

18.09.2020 - Swachh Samwad (Cleanliness dialogue/Public) :- Campaigns and anti –littering notices in Railway premises lid Colonies, Rest houses, Running Rooms, Hospitals and Health units

19.09.2020 - Swachh Stations (Clean stations):- Cleanliness drives at Non Suburban Grade – 1 to 3 category stations and audio /video messages o­n digital screens for creating an impact against plastic.

20.09.2020 - Swachh Stations (Clean stations):- Cleanliness drives at other than Non Suburban Grade – 1 to 3 category stations and creating impact against plastic.

21.09.2020 - Swachh Railgaadi (Clean train):-Inspection of identified train at station and display of Do/Don’t for passengers regarding cleanliness, anti-littering in coaches.

22.09.2020-Swachh Railgaadi (Clean train):- Inspection of trains and washing lines in primary based rakes and stabled rakes. Checking of toilets, inside and outside cleaning with special attention o­n pantry car cleaning.

23.09.2020 - Swachh Parisar (Clean work places):- Intensive drive to clean and improve cleanliness in Railway colonies, offices, Hospitals/Health units, Schools, Depots, Yards, Retiring Rooms, Running Rooms, waiting halls, dormitories crew lobbies etc with instructions to that offices to discourage use of plastic products.

24.09.2020 - Swachh Parisar (Clean Residential Premises):- Drive to clean up garbage in railway colonies, beautification of premises by pruning of trees and plantation and landscaping.

25.09.2020 - Swachh Aahar (Clean food) :- Intensive cleaning of all canteens, food stalls for clean and hygienic environment. Provision of dry and wet dustbins at food stalls.

26.09.2020 - Swachh Aahar (Clean food):- Intensive cleaning of all canteens, food stalls for clean and hygienic environment and ensure waste disposal system. Protective gear clothing for pantry staff.

27.09.2020 - Swachh Neer (Clean water):- Inspection of all water installations, filter plants, for pre and post filteration quality of water, source of water supply.  Inspection of cleanliness and hygiene maintained at filter plants.

28.09.2020 - Swachh Neer (Clean water) : Inspection of water installations  including in offices, Railway colonies, hospitals, health units, schools etc and checkeing the quality of water of water coolers, taps etc.

29.09.2020 - Swachh Prasadhan (Clean Toilets) :- Checking of all toilet blocks at railway staions, coaching depots, trains and surrounding areas with attention towards leaking of pipes, drainages and replacing of broken items.

30.09.2020 - Swachh competition and Review/Briefing.  A drawing competition was held today at the Rail Museum Hubballi for children in the age category upto 8 years, 8 to 12 years and 12 to 16 years. Theme for the drawing competition was Swachh Bharat and about 111 children from all age groups participated.  The results of the drawing competition will be declared o­n 2nd October o­n the Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi Ji the father of the nation.

Shri Ajay Kumar Singh, GM/SWR informed that Railway is committed to create a Swachh Bharat and urged the Railway fraternity to continue the initiatives taken up during the Swachhata Pakhwara so that we can inculcate the importance of cleanliness in our places of work and at our homes. He said that Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has been launched by Shri Narendra Modi, Hon'ble Prime Minister, 6 years back and the results are visible now.  He encouraged all the staff to participate in the drive, understanding the significance of cleanliness more so in the prevailing pandemic.  Shri Singh stated that cleanliness is next to Godliness as stated by Mahatma Gandhi ji and Swachh is the stepping stone for Yoga.
