The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India has introduced the initiative under the aegis of the Fit India Movement, namely “Fit India Freedom Run” from 15th Aug to 2nd Oct 2020.  Fit India Freedom Run is conceived keeping in view the indispensable need to keep ourselves fit while maintaining social distancing. 

As per directives of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, “Fit India Freedom Run” movement was observed in SWR from 15th August, 2020 and will conclude o­n 2ndOct.2020. The concept of Freedom Run is that o­ne can run /walk along a route of his/her choice, at a time that suits him/her. o­ne can even take breaks during such run/walk. Basically o­ne runs his own race and times his own pace.  Fit India Movement is being conducted following  social distancing norms and encourages the new normal of ‘virtual runs’ as is being practiced by runners / walkers across the world.

During this period, many sporting and fitness activities were conducted all over SWR Zone conveying the importance of health for quality of life-personally and professionally - for employees. Families of employees also are roped in.  In last 48 days, around 7000 employees and their families from all three divisions of SWR, i.e., Hubballi, Bengaluru & Mysuru took part in fitness activities like Jogging, Walking, Cycling etc., o­n regular basis  and approx. 28000 Kms/day (Avg.) was covered by employees and their families.  In last 48 days, total 10.40 lakh Kms have been covered by all employees and their family members. Staff from Hubballi and Mysuru Workshops,Hubballi and Krishnarajapuram diesel sheds also have participated in large numbers.

During this movement, GM/SWR Shri Ajay Kumar Singh & President/SWRWWO Smt. Sujata Singh participated along with officers and their families in the fitness activities, Divisional Railway Managers at Hubbali, Bengaluru & Mysuru have also taken active part in motivating the officers and staff at the Divisions to take part in the run and other sports activities. Along with regular exercises, matches in various Sports also were organized. Yoga and Meditation sessions too were held to emphasize the importance of well-being.

In view of restrictions due to COVID, department wise fit India freedom runs were organized in small units so that each and every employee and their families were made aware of the importance of fitness especially in prevailing pandemic period so that   our immune system shall be strong to fight the virus.

This Fit India Freedom run will conclude o­n 2nd Oct, 2020 and it has gone a long way in creating fitness awareness among the Railway fraternity.  Looking into the spontaneous response from huge number of employees and their families, it will certainly reap benefits for all the participants throughout their life and if continued daily will improve o­nes overall physical health.

Shri Ajay Kumar Singh, GM/SWR said that physical fitness is an essential and integral part of life. Shri Singh said that with participation of every citizen, Fit India Freedom Run provides a unique and exciting opportunity to work towards a healthier India.
