Press Release No. 434, NEW RUNNING ROOM INAUGURATED BY GM AT HUBBALLI

                                दक्षिण पश्चिम रेलवे/ SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY                                                         प्रेस विज्ञप्ति/ Press Release No. 434 Dt: 31.03.2021

NEW RUNNING ROOM INAUGURATED BY GM AT HUBBALLI

Shri Ajay Kumar Singh, General Manager, South Western Railway inaugurated newly constructed Running Room at Hubballi today (31.03.2021). The dedication of Running Room even on the last day of service of Shri Ajay Kumar Singh display his & Railways commitment to the welfare of the staff.

The construction of the building was completed under the leadership of Shri Arvind Malkhede, Divisional Railway Manger, Hubballi with the team of Engineers led by Shri P. Mahender, Senior Divisional Engineer (Co-ordination) and Shri Ishan Srivastava, Divisional Engineer (Head Quarters) at a cost of Rs. 3.9 crore.

When the project was started owing to the lockdown, it was difficult to get an architect empanelled for the design of the new building. Under the directions of Principal Chief Engineer SWR Shri Vipul Kumar, novel designs were sought from Architecture students of the local colleges in the area, and the shortlisted design was suitably awarded, too. This innovation ensured that the design of the building was ready in no time, and work commenced even during the lockdown.

The Running Room was necessitated as the old building was to go under repairs and did not have sufficient capacity to accommodate all the running staff. With the construction of this new Running Room, SWR has ensured that it's running staff are taken care of well during their duties with state of the art amenities.

The running room is a home away from home for the loco pilots and guards, two key staff involved in the running of trains. The staff of goods trains don't have a fixed timing and are required to work as and when the train is required to run ('train ordered' in Railway parlance). Often they end up working at late hours even at night, ensuring safe, timely and efficient transportation of essential goods and commodities to keep the wheels of our economy running. It is most essential to ensure that they get a proper rest and food so that in their next shift they are alert and ensure that the train runs safely without any hitch.

In order to ensure this the Running Room is equipped with modern amenities on par with any star hotel with ACs, comfortable twin sharing rooms, beds and attached washrooms and encourage the running staff to relax and de-stress, Reading Room/Library, Recreation Room and Meditation Room has been provided. Running Staff undergo a lot of stress during their duties as they are required to stay alert and maintain quick response to changing signals and maintain strict vigil for any obstruction or technical failure on the tracks for upto 10+ hours at a stretch.
