South Western Railway observed World Environment Day o­n 5th June, 2024. o­n this occasion, Shri Arvind Srivastava, GM/SWR, offered floral tributes to  Mahatma Gandhi statue, and a pledge o­n Environment Day was taken by all officers and staff at Hubballi Railway Station. Following this, a Nukkad Natak was performed by Scouts and Guides. Later, cloth bags were distributed by Shri Arvind Srivastava to the passengers as part of the effort to beat plastic pollution and adopt green initiatives.

Further, a video conference was held by Railway Board addressing all General Managers of Indian Railways.During this event, SWR was awarded with Swachhata Pakhwada 2023, for the best performing zone which was received by Shri A K Sirohi, Principal Chief Materials Manager, o­n behalf of SWR at New Delhi from Railway Board Chairperson and CEO Smt Jaya Varma Sinha.

Later, the ‘Sustainability Handbook 2024,’ created by the Environment & Housekeeping Management department of South Western Railway, was released by General Manager Shri Arvind Srivastava. The handbook highlights the various green initiatives taken up by SWR to promote a green environment and clean energy. A tree plantation program was also conducted after this occasion at Rail Soudha, Gadag Road, Hubballi.

On this occasion a selfie point has been installed at SSS Hubballi Railway station and signature campaign has been conducted to create ecological awareness. This selfie spot encourages travelers to capture and share their commitment to the planet. The initiative not o­nly beautifies the station but also serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our environment.

 Shri Arvind Srivastava, GM/SWR said that the theme of World Environment Day 2024 is ‘land restoration, stopping desertification and building drought resilience’.  This is to highlight with the slogan "Our Land. Our Future. We are Generation Restoration," highlights the critical need to heal our planet's ecosystems.

South Western Railway has implemented extensive waste management, energy conservation, afforestation, and awareness campaigns o­n banning single-use plastics and anti-littering. They have upgraded all buildings with LED fittings, BLDC fans, and energy-efficient pumps. Solar energy projects generated 5.69 million units of electricity, saving ₹2.81 crores, with solar capacity reaching 6,334 kWp.

Key initiatives include the restored Devaragudihal Lake, which provides 3.6 crore liters of water monthly, 12 approved water projects, a 50 KLD sewage treatment plant in Belagavi, and rainwater harvesting at Byappanahalli Station. Additionally, SWR operates 8 Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs), 9 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), and 2 water recycling plants, with further expansions planned. In afforestation, 5,000 trees were planted in 2023-24, Today as part of World Environment Day 20,500 saplings were planted around SWR with 50,000 more planned for 2024-25.

SWR received the Environment and Cleanliness Shield 2023 from the Railway Board and first place in Swachhata Pakhwada 2023. It also earned the Certificate of Merit from the National Energy Conservation Award 2023 by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. Sir M Visvesvaraya Bengaluru Station achieved the Platinum Green Station Rating from the Indian Green Building Council, featuring water recycling plants, rainwater harvesting, and rooftop solar panels.Yesvantpur Station was certified as the first Green Station in SWR for its sustainable facilities and initiatives in health, hygiene, sanitation, and energy efficiency.

GM said that, South Western Railway is fulfilling its obligation towards climate change goals and green environment by taking up initiatives in the areas of renewable energy generation, solid waste management, water management, energy conservation, renewal of water bodies, afforestation etc.  He appreciated the efforts of Environment and Housekeeping Management (EnHM) department of SWR.

World Environment Day was also celebrated by the Hubballi, Bengaluru and Mysuru Divisions. During this occasion a Plastic Bottle crushing machine was inaugurated by Shri Yogesh Mohan, Divisional Railway Manager in KSR Bengaluru Railway station as part of a CSR initiative to ensure the recycling plastic bottles used by passengers in the station.
