SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY



Shri Prashant Kumar Mishra has taken over the charge as Additional General Manager (AGM), South Western Railway on Thursday, the 24th, October 2019 at Hubballi. 

An officer of Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers cadre, with more than three decades of experience, is passionately involved in researching & restoration of Railway heritage, environmental works, training of front line staff, creating a culture of innovation and constant improvement by developing a passionate team. Prior to his joining as AGM/SWR, Hubballi, he was serving as Chief Workshop Engineer at Eastern Railways, Kolkata.

Shri P. K. Mishra has worked in undivided ER and NFR in different capacities. He had worked as DRM in three divisions, Asansol, Malda and Alipurdwar.

Asansol division was awarded with best division award twice in a row, first time in history for record loading, earnings and overall improvement under his leadership: Best ever loading and earning records in two years in succession, since inception, achieving 16% growth in total originating earnings. Total incremental growth in earnings was 1100 crores in two years. Division’s contribution in total earnings of ER increased from 40 % to 49% in two years. ( Achievement in Asansol Division)

His relentless focus on mobility & capacity enhancement works; decongesting choked sections, yards and stations and reliability centred maintenance resulted in significant jump in throughput. He introduced peer based training method at field to improve knowledge and skill of front line staff.

As Divisional Railway Managers of Asansol Division & Malda Division in Eastern Railway, he restored and resurrected more than fifty priceless heritage buildings including the iconic Durand Institute- the first railway institute in India, Burlington, the first Railway hospital in ER, historic Rajmahal station, Ganges river side bungalows of Sahibganj, first railway heritage resort of country in Madhupur, etc. These heritage buildings, after decades of neglect and abandon, on the verge of demolition, were salvaged and restored as land marks of the towns. (Heritage Uncovered - A Glimpse into our Past) & (Glory of MLDT Division)


He introduced Self financing innovative model of heritage development at extremely low cost, restored Railway institutes as cultural and social hub, organised Heritage walks, and constructed heritage galleries at seven major stations in the Division to create awareness of our legacy.

While serving as DRM in three Divisions, for working towards green environment, he was instrumental in planting 8 lakhs trees , construction of longest heavy duty road by released sleepers, creating 100 mini forests, 95 water bodies and many Rainwater harvesting plants to his credit , a feat appreciated by Railway Board. He successfully completed re-development of Asansol and Jasidih stations and introduced slew of passenger amenities measures all over division including 12 Premium Air conditioned paid lounges in major stations in Asansol & Malda Divisions.He took keen interest in Mission 500 (a novel strategy to complete more than 500 works in calendar year), improving staff amenities, redressing staff grievances and developed model colonies all over the division. More than 1100 staff were awarded for their outstanding contribution for improving safety, earnings and mobility.

He had done intensive research on Railway heritage and written number of articles on Railway heritage, leadership, management and technical topics including compendium on Diesel loco maintenance. He was contributing editor of new diesel maintenance white manual. He has written extensively on Indian Railway heritage, including history of Southern Mahratta Railways, history of West of India Portuguese Guaranteed Railways, Consulting Engineer, Rail and Coal, Santhal revolution & EIR, and published two coffee table books on heritage restoration works.His article “First Train to Raneegunge” is being published by Dorling Kindersley DK, Penguin Random House division of Bertelsmann AG.(Articles on Indian Railway Heritage)
