A ) Escorting of important trains of South Western Railway has been taken up from 01.07.2004. Four armed RPF staff are escorting these trains. These escorting staff are sensitised to the security needs of traveling passengers and provide security related assistance to them.
B) Access Control
As a initiative to provide better security to passengers and passenger area, the following important railway stations are provided with access control from 01.07.2004.
Introduction of access control has restricted entry of anti-social elements into railway premises, thus providing a more crime free atmosphere on Railways.

C) Campaign Against Drugging
As a part of passenger awareness campaign towards increasing awareness of passengers to various methods employed by miscreants, laminated pamphlets in Kannada/Hindi and English/Hindi were distributed among passengers informing about the modus operandi of drugging of passengers. This crime is well under control and during the current year 2004, only one case has been reported in SWR.
D) PASSENGERS AWARENESS PROGRAMME
The RPF/SWR/ have conducted special "passengers awareness programme? in December 2004. Besides distribution of pamphlets in trains and platforms at originating stations, one musical-cum-drama troop is formed out of RPF staff. They perform street plays, sing songs for increasing awareness among the passengers regarding drugging and other security related issues.
The programme has been found very effective. The number of cases of drugging is going down. These positive efforts of preventing crimes are appreciated by one and all. Stickers are also being arranged to be pasted in coaches.
Laminated pamphlets, bilingual in Kannada / Hindi and English / Hindi were prepared giving information regarding modus operandi of drugging of passengers by miscreants during journey and the same were distributed in trains to increase passenger awareness against drugging.
E) Controlling of Anti-social elements
Apart from escorting of trains and access control, special raids are conducted to detect trespassing in Railway premises, unauthorised procuring / supplying of Railway tickets, nuisance creators, unauthorised hawking, traveling fraudulently or without proper tickets, males traveling in coaches reserved for females, smoking in Trains and Railway premises etc. Persons apprehended committing such offences are prosecuted under the provisions of the Railways Act.
F) Appeal/request to passengers
The security of passengers and controlling of crime against passenger in South Western Railway is a continuous effort. To supplement the efforts, the following points related to security of passengers are listed and informed to the traveling public through issue of pamphlets and also by making announcement through the public address system available at the Railways stations and loud hailers, thereby educating the passengers, which has enabled to provide enhanced security to the traveling public.
1) Travel with limited and manageable luggage.
2) Arrive at the platform with proper tickets at least 15 minutes before departure of train
3) Do not leave your luggage unattended.
4) Do not purchase / use or sell Railway tickets from / to unauthorised persons.
5) Do not encourage unauthorised hawkers.
6) Do not give alms to beggars.
7) Do not enter reserved coaches without proper reservation / tickets.
8) Male passengers should not enter coaches reserved exclusively for females.
9) Do not travel on rooftop, steps, buffer and engine of the trains
10) Do not carry dangerous or offensive goods in train.
11) Do not smoke in railway premises or in trains.
12) Do not drink liquor in Railway premises or in trains
G ) EDUCATING PASSENGERS ABOUT BOMB THREAT
The prevailing security scenario has posed in new challenge to RPF, arising out of terrorist attack, bomb threats etc. The RPF has risen to the occasion and the RPF dog squad located at major stations are provided with sniffer dogs, which are deployed in short notice, in case of bomb calls and during times of tension prevailing in the country.
Appeals are made to the passengers through pamphlets passenger announcement system and loud hailers, not to touch any suspicious and abandoned luggage / articles, and on noticing such luggage / articles to inform RPF / GRP immediately. South Western Railway is free from incidents of bomb blasts, however a few cases of hoax calls are received which are attended to immediately.
