Mechanical Department is playing a pivotal Role in the functioning of Bangalore Division of South Western Railway. It basically maintains the Rolling Stock consisting of coaches, Wagons, Diesel Locos and maintains close co-ordination with Operation Department of the Division in Train services.
It has two coaching depots at Bangalore City (SBC) and Yesvanthpur (YPR) for maintenance of Coaches and certification of Passenger carrying trains. For maintenance and certification of Freight stock, there are two Wagon Depots situated at Baiyyappanahalli (BYPL) and Satellite Goods Terminal (SGT). There is a full-fledged Diesel Loco Shed at Krishnarajapuram (KJM) and a Satellite shed at Bangalore Cantonment (BNC) for maintenance of Diesel locos. For fuelling of Diesel locos, it maintains three fuelling points at Baiyyappanahalli, (BYPL), Bangalore City (BNC) and Krishnarajapuram (KJM). The department is also maintaining Running Rooms/Crew Rest Rooms at Bangalore, Baiyyappanahalli, Hindupur, Bangarpet, Tumkur, Yesvanthpur, Chikaballapur and Kolar. For enroute examination of trains, there is a small Carriage and Wagon Establishment at Bangarpet. An Accident relief Train (ART) comprising of Medical Relief Van (MRV), MFD and 140 tonnes Diesel Hydraulic Crane is stationed at SBC station.
