HISTORY: South Western Railway was created by amalgamating the re-organized Hubballi division from South Central Railway and Bangalore & Mysore divisions from Southern Railway. It has been operational from 1st April 2003 having the headquarters at Hubballi in the state of Karnataka. Operating department is solely responsible for freight and passenger trains movements over Hubballi Division covering 1350.501 km. Operating department is headed by PCOM/SWR/UBL at Zonal level and Sr.DOM at Divisional level.The main function of operating department is co-coordinating between various departments to ensure smooth train operations round the clock with respect to controlling and directing 24 X 07 train facilities. This department plays a major role with regard to safety, economy and efficiency of all train operations 
Hubballi division is having important tourist places, Some of the important tourist destinations like Hampi ruins, Caves of Badami, Pattadakallu, Aihole, Goan Beaches come under the jurisdiction of Hubballi division of this Railway.

SWR’s Hubballi Division held an interactive session for railway staff dealing with train operations on 27th September, 2017 at Railway Officers Club, Keshwapur, Hubballi. The main theme of this session was to sensitise the staff involved in train operations so as to eliminate accidents caused by human errors and to boost safety culture in train operations. Various aspects of train operations and factors affecting safety were discussed with the staff. Some of the railway accidents in past were analysed and the staff were counselled on the reasons leading to such accidents. During the course of the programme, interactions were between the staff comprising of station managers, points men, loco-pilots, guards, and section controllers. They were also informed about the new developments in field of safety and counselled on actions to be taken in case of untoward incidents. The approach of senior officers, who noted down grievances and suggestions from the field staff was appreciated by the audience. Operating Branch is very much a passenger oriented Division. Hubli Railway Division has several stations. It runs Express and Passenger train services daily.
