SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY
MATERIALS MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT

1.0 GENERAL

          The Materials Management Department (MMD) started functioning at Hubli from 01.04.2003 after the Headquarters Office of South Western Railway was shifted from Bangalore to Hubli. Earlier, a skeletal Purchase organization was in existence at Bangalore catering to the requirements of indentors of SWR Headquarters and indentors based at Bangalore. Presently, the Headquarters office of MMD is located at First Floor, East Block, Zonal Headquarters, Rail Soudha, Gadag Road, Hubli-580020.

2.0 ORGANIZATION OF MMD:

The organization of the Materials Management Department consists of the following:

The Headquarters Organization at Hubli.

Six Stores Depots

Three Divisional Stores Organizations.

Stores Cell in Construction Organization at BangaloreCantonment.

2.1 ORGANISATION OF HEAD QUARTERS OFFICE:

         The MMD is headed by the Principal Chief Materials Manager who is the Co-coordinating Head of the Department. He is assisted by SAG officers, JAG officers, Sr. Scale and Jr. Scale officers.

           2.2 ORGANIZATION OF FIELD UNITS:

           The various field units of MMD on SWR are as follows:

A) Stocking Depots:

1.General Stores Depot, Hubli

The depot was established in February 1964. The depot is headed by a JAG officer who is assisted by Jr. Scale officers. This depot stocks C&W, Electrical, Signal and Telecommunication, Permanent Way, Engineering, Steel, Chemical, Oils, Paints and Hardware items. This depot caters to the requirements of indentors in the geographical jurisdiction of Hubli Division. Imprest items, including Diesel and Kerosene, are supplied to indentors by road transport. This depot also deals with the disposal of scrap generated in geographical jurisdiction of Hubli Division.

2.Mechanical Stores Depot, Hubli

The depot was established in 1885. The depot is headed by a Jr. Scale Officer. This depot exclusively caters to the requirements of Carriage Repair Workshop at Hubli. The depot stocks mainly C&W and Electrical items.

3. Diesel Stores Depot, Hubli

The depot was established in 1999. The depot is presently headed by a Jr. Scale Officer.This depot caters exclusively to the requirements of spares of EMD/GM Locos of Diesel Shed at Hubli.

4. Mechanical & General Stores Depot, Ashokapuram , Mysore

The depot was established in 1922. The depot is headed by a JAG officer who is assisted by one Jr. Scale officer. This is a combined Mechanical and General Stores Depot which caters to the full material requirements of Central Workshop at Ashokapuram and the requirements of indentors in the geographical jurisdiction of Bangalore and Mysore Divisions. Imprest items, including HSD and Kerosene are supplied to indentors by road transport. This depot also deals with disposal of scrap generated in the geographical area of Bangalore and Mysore Divisions.

5. Diesel Stores Depot, Krishnarajapuram, Bangalore

The depot was established in 1983. The depot is headed by a Senior Scale Officer. This depot exclusively caters to the requirements of Diesel Loco Shed at Krishnarajapuram, Bangalore.

6. Divisional Stores Depot, Bangalore

The Divisional Stores Depot at Bangalore started from March 1998. The depot is headed by a Junior Scale Officer. This depot, which was initially started as sub-depot of General Stores Depot/Perambur in Southern Railway, is now an independent depot and caters to the general and maintenance requirements of Bangalore division.

B) Divisional Stores Organizations:

1. Divisional Stores Organization, Hubli

2. Divisional Stores Organization, Mysore

3. Divisional Stores Organization, Bangalore

All three Divisions of SWR have Divisional Stores organizations are headed by JAG officers. The Divisional Stores Officers co-ordinate with the Branch Officers of the Divisions for their materials requirements. Urgent requirements of stock items and all non-stock items up to the powers delegated to the Divisional Stores Officers are met through Local Purchases at divisions’ level. The Divisional Stores set up also co-ordinates with Branch Officers for Scrap mobilization from the respective divisions, particularly for P. Way Scrap and Auctions the scrap generated in the geographical area of their respective Divisions.

  C) Stores Cell of Construction Organization, Bangalore Cantonment

Stores Cell of Construction Organization at Bangalore Cantonment is headed by a Senior Administrative Grade officer and caters by procurement of materials for Construction Organization through local purchase. It also coordinates with Construction Organization for mobilization of scrap generated for disposal.
