Operating Department is primarily concerned with the following:

Ø Overseeing the running of both passenger carrying and freight trains duly guiding and supporting the operations carried out by the Divisions of Hubballi, Mysuru & Bengaluru.

Ø Liaison with the trade and industry for freight business.

Ø Planning of special trains and additional coaches (including coaches and trains on Full Tariff Rate) to cater to the requirements of travelling public.

Ø Examining and processing the proposals received from various sources regarding timetabling and running of new trains with the Railway Board.

Ø Examining and processing of proposals regarding Private Freight Terminals and Sidings for the trade and industry.

ØPlanning of infrastructure for meeting the traffic requirements.

Operating Department is headed by Principal Chief Operations Manager. There are three wings in Operating Department at Zonal level viz. Freight, Passenger and Planning headed by Chief Freight Transportation Manager, Chief Passenger Transportation Manager and Chief Traffic Planning Manager respectively.
