Function of the Safety Department


ØSafety Department is a multi-disciplinary department which ensures the safety on Indian Railways.

ØEnsures the implementation of all the safety directives issued by RB.

ØMonitors the safe maintenance and operation practices adopted by all the departments.

ØConducts surprise checks for ensuring safe train operations.

ØCounsel and educate staff to inculcate spirit of safe train operations.

ØPrepares the Safety circulars, Posters, Bulletins to educate the Railway men and Public to avoid accidents.

ØLaunches Safety Drives to prevent the unusual occurrences & create awareness of being alert & Safety consciousness.

ØCounselling is the major tool adopted by this department for educating the staff and public to avoid the accidents at level crossings.

ØConducts the Internal Railway Safety Audit and Inter Railway Safety Audits to ensure safety and to imbibe the Safety measures practiced in the Zonal Railways.


Over view of the Safety Department

Safety Department is entrusted with the onerous task to imbibe the safe working of Passengers & Goods trains with the active cooperation and monitoring of all sister departments. Safety Counsellors and Officers have to function like watch guards to ensure the systems run and Acts/Rules coherence with Manuals/Codes/JPOs/ Practices are strictly followed in train operation and maintenance. If deviations are noticed and systems degenerate, the same shall be brought to the notice of concerned PHODs/CHODs for adopting corrective measures.


Performance & Achievements

Performance Indices of the Safety Department

1. Generation of exceptional reports from data loggers and counselling of SMs for setting of points against the blocked line.

2.Provision of stickers on the panel to remind SMs regarding setting of points against the blocked line as per GR 3.38 at all stations.

3.Regular Monthly Intensive Footplate & other Inspections / counselling of staff by Officers and Supervisors of HQ and Divisions.

4.Inspection of Running Rooms and Crew Lobbies regarding facilities and Breathalyser tests while Signing ‘ON’ & ‘OFF’ and also enroute.

5.Awareness campaigns are organised periodically at RTO offices, village Panchayats & at LC gates.

6.Safety Pamphlets and Safety Stickers are distributed at LC gates and nearby villages for educating Road Users about precautions to be observed while crossing LCs.

7.Lesson introduced in the curriculum of 7th & 10th std in Karnataka state during the year 2013-14.

8.Talk shows in AIR/Dharwad on Safety at LCs and publicity through Newspapers, Electronic media & Social media about Safety of road users and passengers.

9.Prevention of loading inflammable materials and two wheelers with petrol in fuel tanks.

10.Awareness regarding uses of fire extinguishers in trains to passengers.

11.Switch off the Mobile charging points between 23.00 hrs to 05.00 hrs.
